Aqua Voice is a cloud dictation app for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and it's worth paying for if you dictate names, jargon or code and don't mind your audio going to Aqua's servers. You'll find out quickly: the free allowance is 1,000 words, once, which Aqua puts at about 7 minutes of talking. This Aqua Voice review is built from Aqua's own pages, checked in October 2026, plus 12 YouTube videos and 10 Reddit and Hacker News threads. We haven't used Aqua day to day, and Blazing Transcribe, which comes up in the alternatives, is ours.

Quick verdict: Aqua is strongest where most dictation apps are weakest: names, jargon and code terms, and fixing a sentence by voice while you're still saying it. Pro is $8 a month billed annually or $10 month to month (as of October 2026). The catches: it's cloud-only on desktop, the free words run out fast, transcripts may be stored unless you turn on Privacy Mode, and live Realtime text needs the Max plan at $24 to $30 a month.

What is Aqua Voice?

Aqua Voice is an AI dictation app from Aqua Voice, Inc. You hold a hotkey (Fn on a Mac, right Alt on Windows), talk, and cleaned-up text appears in whatever app you're in.

It was founded in 2023 and joined Y Combinator in Winter 2024. Co-founder Finn Brown has dictated since sixth grade because he's dyslexic (YC page), so he knows what bad dictation feels like.

Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, one subscription

As of October 2026:

PlatformHow it worksNeeds
MacDesktop app, one universal build for Apple Silicon and IntelNo minimum macOS stated
WindowsDesktop appWindows 10 or 11
iPhoneCustom keyboard, launched 8 April 2026iOS 17+, Full Access
AndroidFloating button, launched 6 October 2026Android 10+, no Android Go

One subscription covers all four. There's no web app for live dictation; the CLI, which also runs on Linux, only manages settings and transcribes files.

Avalon, and what Aqua's 97.4% actually measures

Avalon is Aqua's own speech model. Avalon 1.5, from April 2026, is the current multilingual version: 49 languages, per Aqua's languages guide.

On Aqua's own AISpeak-10 benchmark, Avalon scores 97.4% key-term accuracy, against 78.8% for ElevenLabs Scribe and 65.1% for Whisper Large v3. Aqua's Mac page is upfront: "This measures key-term recognition, not overall transcript accuracy or a head-to-head test of these apps."

Fair enough. It's still Aqua's benchmark, run by Aqua.

The 2026 features worth knowing

Edit Mode is the headline: select text, hold the Aqua key and say the change. It shipped on 20 July 2026, is on every desktop plan, and handles up to 6,000 characters at a time.

Realtime Mode shows your words live in the toolbar as you speak. It's desktop only, on Max or Business. So is "Send it": end with "send it" and Aqua inserts the text and sends it. Useful in chat apps, provided you meant it.

The rest is about getting words right: a Custom Dictionary (basic on Free, expanded on Pro and up), Custom Instructions from Pro, Replacements that expand a spoken phrase into a snippet, and opt-in Deep Context, which reads on-screen text to get names right (voice coding page). Your settings sync between phone and desktop.

For developers: Cursor, Claude Code, MCP and the CLI

Aqua types into Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, VS Code, JetBrains, Xcode, Zed and terminals, no plugins needed (voice coding page). File Tagging turns "main dot t s" into an @-tag in Cursor, Windsurf, Cline and Antigravity, though not in Claude Code, Codex or the VS Code AI sidebar. There's an MCP server on every plan, Free included, and the CLI installs an Aqua skill for Claude Code and Codex.

Tip from Productivity Academy (affiliate link): use Custom Instructions to ask for plain transcription in ChatGPT or Claude, so Aqua leaves your prompt alone. More on dictating prompts into Cursor.

Aqua Voice pricing (October 2026)

As of October 2026, from Aqua's pricing page and its App Store listing:

PlanBilled annuallyMonth to monthIn-app on iPhoneWhat you get
Free$0n/an/a1,000 words once, Avalon included, basic dictionary, no card
Pro$8/mo$10/mo$119/yr or $12.99/moUnlimited words, Custom Instructions, expanded dictionary
Max$24/mo$30/mo$374.99/yr or $39.99/moPro plus Realtime Mode, "Send it", early access
Business$19/seat/mo ($228/seat/yr)$24/seat/mon/aMax plus SSO/SAML, SCIM, reporting, Zero Data Retention, team dictionaries; 2-seat minimum

Older reviews still list a $12 Team plan, no Max tier and a monthly free allowance. Aqua's current pricing page says otherwise.

The free plan is 1,000 words, once

It doesn't reset. Aqua's FAQ calls it the free trial, and there's no time-limited Pro trial, though you can try Realtime within those words. Seven minutes goes quickly, so spend it on your hardest vocabulary.

Which plan you actually need

Most individuals want Pro. Realtime and "Send it" need Max (or Business). Realtime used to sit in Pro and older subscribers kept it, so reviews showing live text on Pro are out of date for new buyers.

Cheaper routes: students, web checkout and the API

Students get 70% off Pro and Max. On iPhone, the web price is lower than in-app, and Aqua's iOS page notes "App Store billing may differ". The Avalon API costs $0.39 per audio hour with the first $1 free, and Antonija Pek uses it inside MacWhisper instead of subscribing. Aqua's pricing page lists no lifetime option.

Is Aqua Voice private? Where your audio goes

Cloud processing, and the offline question

As of October 2026, Aqua's Mac and Windows pages say there's no offline mode, and transcription runs on Aqua's servers. Its FAQ says offline availability varies by platform, so if you need dictation without a connection on iPhone, check with Aqua. Desktop History lives on your computer, and local audio for recent sessions is deleted after 3 days.

Privacy Mode is off unless you turn it on

From Aqua's privacy policy (effective 29 July 2026), terms and pricing page, as of October 2026:

SettingTranscripts on Aqua's serversRetention period stated?Used to train AI?
Privacy Mode off (default)May be stored "to the extent necessary to improve the product"NoNot unless you opt in
Privacy Mode onNot collected (session metadata may be)n/aNot unless you opt in
Business planZero Data Retention listed; Aqua's FAQ says team plans can enforce Privacy Mode org-widen/aNot unless you opt in

Aqua says it won't train AI models on your content unless you opt in, but with Privacy Mode off it may still store transcripts to improve the product, and it doesn't say for how long. If what you dictate includes client work, patient details or proprietary code, that's a bigger question than the price, so turn Privacy Mode on.

Compliance and the fine print

Aqua has done the paperwork: SOC 2 Type II in March 2026, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 in July, and claimed GDPR and HIPAA compliance in September, with a BAA on request. Contact Aqua before using patient data to confirm which plans are covered.

It doesn't sell personal data or share audio or transcripts with ad platforms, though it shares hashed emails and conversion events with them. The App Store privacy label lists Audio Data as "Data Linked to You". Aqua has published more than most; the defaults still do the deciding.

Aqua Voice reviews: what real users say

What users like

Hard words, mostly. A r/ProductivityApps user who ran Aqua and Wispr Flow for two months each called Aqua "very accurate on technical terms". A January 2026 roundup on the same subreddit ranked it first for new terms like "Claude Code", though the poster promotes a rival app.

A r/macapps user comparing apps for fiction writing ranked it top: "the best-performing app for me seems to be Aqua Voice".

Voice editing gets the rest of the praise. Seth from REtipster, who says on camera he isn't paid, put it simply: "we don't type and speak the same way". Sponsored and promotional videos (Everyday AI, AI with Alex) make the same point.

What users complain about

The free allowance. AsapGuide called it "almost useless". Then the subscription. One r/macapps user's verdict: "Aqua Voice is a monthly payment, so scratch that".

Reliability gets mixed reports. A r/macapps user got one long paragraph until they wrote a custom prompt, and that rival-promoting roundup said it "misses the first word most of the times". AsapGuide also found it "still a bit buggy". One September 2026 Windows buyer reported dropped words, unclickable error dialogs and an unprocessed refund (one user's account).

Then the cloud. A Hacker News commenter with 20,000+ hours of dictation called local inference "an absolute requirement".

Who's paid, and who isn't

Most YouTube coverage of Aqua is sponsored (Everyday AI, Anas Riad) or carries affiliate links (Productivity Academy, Tool Finder, Yash Chitneni, A Fading Thought). AsapGuide links to Wispr Flow, and Reddit is busy with rival founders. Even so, the picture is consistent: users like the accuracy on hard words and the voice editing, and grumble about the free allowance, the subscription and the cloud.

Our take on Aqua Voice

On paper, Aqua's pitch holds up: a model aimed at key terms, Edit Mode on every desktop plan, four platforms on one subscription, and an MCP server, CLI and API for developers.

Before paying, remember: you get about 7 minutes to judge it, Privacy Mode is opt-in with no stated retention period, Realtime and "Send it" sit on the $24 to $30 tier, desktop needs a connection, and the 97.4% is Aqua's own benchmark. One r/MacOS user who tested six apps concluded that for everyday dictation, accuracy wasn't the differentiator; price, platforms and workflow were. Aqua wins on platforms. Price depends on how much you talk.

Is Aqua Voice right for you?

Pick Aqua if you:

  • dictate jargon, names or code. Tool Finder (affiliate link) called it "much more suited towards developers"
  • need Windows, iPhone or Android, or one subscription across all of them
  • want to edit by voice
  • run a team that needs SSO, SCIM or Zero Data Retention (Business)

Skip it if you:

  • need dictation that works without a connection on a Mac or PC
  • don't want transcripts stored by default
  • want to pay once (Aqua's pricing page lists no lifetime option)

Aqua Voice alternatives

For a longer list, see our Wispr Flow alternatives roundup.

Wispr Flow

Aqua's most common comparison. A Fading Thought (Aqua affiliate link) puts both in the "simple, works out of the box" group. That two-month r/ProductivityApps user found Aqua very accurate on technical terms and Wispr slow on long text. More in our Wispr Flow review.

Superwhisper

A Fading Thought files it with the "tinkerer" apps: more to configure, more control. See our Superwhisper review.

Apple Dictation

It's built into macOS, so try it before you pay for anything.

Blazing Transcribe (ours)

This is ours, so weigh that accordingly. Hold fn, speak, let go, and your words are typed into whatever app you're in, terminals included. Unlike Aqua's desktop app, speech recognition is 100% on-device: your voice never leaves your Mac, and it works offline. It's currently free (no account, no trial timer, no card) and open source, with the code on GitHub.

The limits: Mac only, Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 15 or later, and no meeting transcription. No Windows, iPhone or Android apps either, and no equivalent of Edit Mode, Realtime, "Send it" or MCP.

Final verdict

If you dictate technical language across a Mac, a PC and a phone and you're comfortable with cloud processing, Aqua Voice is one of the strongest options, and Pro at $8 to $10 a month is fair. If you're on an Apple Silicon Mac and want your voice to stay on the machine, you don't need a subscription to start. If you're on a Mac, Blazing Transcribe is free to try.

FAQ

Is Aqua Voice free?

Aqua Voice is free for 1,000 words, once (about 7 minutes of talking), no card needed, and it's the most common complaint in the Aqua Voice reviews we read. After that, Pro is $8 a month billed annually or $10 month to month, as of October 2026.

Does Aqua Voice work offline?

Not on desktop: Aqua's Mac and Windows pages say there's no offline mode. Its FAQ says offline availability varies by platform, so for iPhone, check with Aqua.

Does Aqua Voice store your audio or transcripts?

It may. With Privacy Mode off, the default, Aqua may store transcripts with no stated retention period. Turn Privacy Mode on to stop that; Business adds Zero Data Retention. Aqua says it won't train on your content unless you opt in.

Does Aqua Voice work on Windows, iPhone and Android?

Yes, Aqua Voice works on Windows 10 and 11, iPhone on iOS 17+ as a keyboard, and Android 10+ as a floating button, all on one subscription.

Does Aqua Voice work with Claude Code and Cursor?

Yes, it types into both. File Tagging (spoken filenames to @-tags) works in Cursor but not in Claude Code.

Is there an Aqua Voice lifetime plan?

Not as of October 2026: Aqua's pricing page lists no lifetime option. The pay-as-you-go route is the Avalon API at $0.39 per audio hour.
