iPhone dictation not working? Open Settings, tap General, tap Keyboard and check that Enable Dictation is on. If it's already on, turn it off, wait about 15 seconds, turn it back on, and disconnect any Bluetooth headphones, car audio or watch before you try again.

Still stuck? Find your symptom in the table below. Everything here is written for iOS 27, with notes where iOS 26 is different.

Try these quick fixes first

Quickest and most likely first:

  1. Check Enable Dictation in Settings > General > Keyboard. If it's on, turn it off, wait about 15 seconds, then turn it back on.
  2. Disconnect Bluetooth. People report headphones, car audio and an Apple Watch getting in the way.
  3. Use Apple's keyboard in the right language. Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the keyboard.
  4. Restart your iPhone. Dull, and it works more often than it has any right to.
  5. Check Screen Time at Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Other Features > Dictation.
  6. Install the latest iOS 27 update if one is waiting.
  7. Record a Voice Memo, speaking at the bottom of the phone. If your voice sounds bad on playback, it's the microphone, and no dictation setting will fix it.

Low Power Mode and Reset Keyboard Dictionary get repeated a lot online, but Apple doesn't link either to dictation, so we've left them out.

What are you seeing?

With iPhone dictation not working, the symptom usually points at the cause:

The Dictate button is missing from the keyboard

Usually, Enable Dictation is off or you're on someone else's keyboard. Apple calls the mic the Dictate button, and it sits in the bottom-right corner of the keyboard.

Turn on Enable Dictation

iOS 27 added a line to Apple's dictation guide for exactly this: "If you don't see [the Dictate button], go to the Settings app, tap General, tap Keyboard, then turn on Enable Dictation." If a prompt appears, tap Enable Dictation.

Apple's section is "Make dictation possible" in iOS 27 and "Turn on Dictation" in iOS 26, with the same steps but no "If you don't see" line.

Switch back to Apple's keyboard

On a third-party keyboard, touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key and tap one of Apple's. If the Dictate button comes back, stick with Apple's keyboard for dictation.

Check Screen Time

If the Enable Dictation switch itself is missing or won't move, the next section is yours.

Enable Dictation is missing or greyed out

A restriction is the usual suspect, so check Screen Time first.

Screen Time in iOS 27

Apple's Siri, Dictation & Privacy page gives the path: "For Dictation, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Other Features > Dictation." If Dictation is blocked here, allow it. You may need the Screen Time passcode.

Dictation is its own item now, so guides mentioning a combined "Siri & Dictation" toggle are out of date for iOS 27.

Screen Time in iOS 26

The section is called Allowed Apps & Features (Apple's iOS 26 Screen Time guide). Look for Dictation (or Siri and Dictation) in there.

Work, school or family-managed phones

If a parent, school or employer manages your iPhone, they may control this. Ask them. It beats hunting through menus you can't edit.

The mic shows but nothing types

Either the Dictate button lights up and no words appear, or the mic shows with an "x". Apple doesn't document a cause for either, and both turn up regularly in Apple Community threads, so work through these in order.

Disconnect Bluetooth

Commenters credit this fix most, naming AirPods, cars and Apple Watches. One YouTube commenter: "It wasn't working when my phone was connected to my car by blue tooth."

Turn Enable Dictation off for 15 seconds

A quick off-and-on doesn't always take. Another commenter said "I turned off dictation for at least 15 seconds" before switching it back.

Restart, then test the microphone

If a restart changes nothing, run Apple's microphone checks:

  • "Remove any screen protectors, films, or cases from your iPhone." Then clear any debris from the openings.
  • Record a Voice Memo speaking at the bottom of the phone, then play it back.
  • Record a Camera video speaking at the top, switch cameras, repeat.

Our free online mic test also works. If you still sound muffled, Apple is blunt: "If you still sound unclear during calls, recordings, or apps, you might need service."

Dictation stops after a few seconds

Apple's 30-second rule

In iOS 27, dictation stops when you tap the Dictate button, say "Stop dictation", or go quiet. Apple's guide puts it simply: "Remain silent for 30 seconds. Dictation stops automatically." iOS 26 words it differently, with the same 30 seconds.

Thirty seconds is a long pause. If yours cuts out after three, it's something else.

Stray taps and Bluetooth drop-outs

Apple says "the keyboard stays open during Dictation so you can easily switch between touch and voice to enter text." Handy, but a stray thumb on the Dictate button ends the session.

If it only cuts out in the car or with AirPods in, disconnect Bluetooth and try again.

Wrong words or the wrong language

Dictation follows your keyboard language

Apple is clear: "When you use a keyboard for another language, you can use Dictation in that language as well." In Messages, the Dictate key dictates "in the language of your keyboard" (Apple's Messages guide). Leave a French keyboard active and your English comes out as optimistic French.

Siri's Language setting covers Siri, Maps, turn-by-turn directions and Listen to Page in Safari. Dictation isn't listed, so changing it won't help. (The pane is Siri in iOS 27, and Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri in iOS 26.)

Add, switch or remove keyboards

To add a language, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and tap Add New Keyboard (Apple's keyboard guide). This also adds it to Preferred Languages (Preferred Language Order in iOS 26). Switch by touching and holding the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key.

Removing one can help too: one commenter found dictation was "listening for both english & spanish" until they switched Spanish off. A few people say the English (UK) keyboard helped. Anecdotal, but free to try.

Getting cleaner results

Speak towards the bottom of the phone, away from noise, with no case covering the microphone. In iOS 27, Apple Intelligence adds an on-device model that improves spelling, punctuation and capitalisation, in English on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air or later. More on why speech to text gets words wrong.

No punctuation when you dictate

Check Auto-Punctuation

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard and make sure Auto-Punctuation is on. Apple says "In supported languages, Dictation automatically inserts commas, periods, and question marks as you dictate."

Say it out loud

Say the mark by name: "comma", "question mark", "exclamation point". "New line", "new paragraph", "Cap", "All caps" and "No space" handle layout, and some languages accept emoji by name. Editing commands such as "Delete" and "Undo" only work in U.S. English on iPhone 12 and later (except iPhone SE), per Apple's list of dictation commands.

It works in one app but not another

Messages sends a voice note instead of text

Messages has two buttons that look as if they do the same job. They don't. The Dictate key types text. The Record Audio button in the text field, or Audio in the Add menu, sends a recording (Apple's audio messages guide). If friends keep getting voice notes, that's the one you're pressing.

A third-party app can't hear you

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure the app is enabled (Apple). An orange dot shows when an app is using the microphone.

Search fields and offline use

A dead signal usually isn't the problem. Apple says dictation "is processed on your iPhone in many languages, and no internet connection is required." Search fields are the exception: what you say there may be sent to the search engine, so if dictation only fails in a search box with poor signal, that's the likely reason. Stuck in a browser document instead? See Google Docs voice typing not working.

It stopped working after the iOS 27 update

iOS 27 arrived on 14 September 2026 for iPhone 11 and later. If dictation broke after installing it, start gentle.

Restart first, then toggle

Restart, then toggle Enable Dictation off for about 15 seconds. One commenter said a restart alone fixed it after their update.

Install the latest point release

If a newer iOS 27 update is waiting, install it while you make a cup of tea.

Reset All Settings as a last resort

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset, then tap Reset All Settings (Apple's reset guide). Apple says "No data or media are deleted." Settings are another matter: network, keyboard dictionary, location, privacy and Apple Pay cards all reset, so expect to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords. Don't erase the phone.

Still not working?

If your Voice Memos recording sounds bad too, it's the hardware, and that's a repair job. Book it through the Apple Support app or Apple's microphone page.

If Voice Memos sounds fine and dictation still fails after every step above, report it to Apple the same way. Apple Community threads are full of the same complaint on iOS 26, so you're in decent company. If dictation is how you text because typing is hard, don't wait it out.

Our broader speech-to-text troubleshooting guide covers Android and other devices. If you also dictate on a computer, here's how to use speech to text on a Mac.

One line on ours, for computer users only: Blazing Transcribe is a free Mac dictation app (hold fn, talk, let go), with an early Windows version.

FAQ

Why did my iPhone dictation stop working all of a sudden?

Usually a setting, a Bluetooth device or an update. Restart, disconnect Bluetooth, and toggle Enable Dictation in Settings > General > Keyboard. If you still have iPhone dictation not working after that, use the symptom table.

Does iPhone dictation work without internet?

Yes, iPhone dictation works without internet in many languages, according to Apple. Search fields are the exception, because your words may be sent to the search engine.

Why does my iPhone dictation stop after a few seconds?

After 30 seconds of silence, a tap on the Dictate button, or "Stop dictation". Sooner than that, suspect a stray thumb or Bluetooth.

Why is my iPhone dictation so inaccurate?

Inaccurate dictation is usually the keyboard language, so check that first, then a muffled microphone or background noise. On iOS 27, iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air and later also get an Apple Intelligence model that tidies English spelling and punctuation.
